In 1957, Everett "Cotton" Owens became the first driver to average better than 100 miles per hour in winning a stock car race when he chaffeured his self-tuned Pontiac to victory at the final race held on the old beach course at Daytona Beach. In 1959, the first ever at the new 2.5 mile Daytona International Speedway, Owens drove his '58 Pontiac to a world record qualifying speed of 143 miles per hour. The next year, 1960, he put the car pictured on the reverse on the Pole and went on to win the 25 mile qualifier race, the sport's first live televised race.
