In 1959 the South Carolina native finished runner-up for the national title. After Owens retired as a driver, he formed his own team and won 40 races, including the 1966 national championship with David Pearson driving. He also sponsored Buddy Baker's car between 1967 and 1970, winning the Southern 500 at Darlington in 1970. Owens retired as owner in 1973.
