Known as King of the Modifieds in the early 1950s, Cotton Owens went on to win nine NASCAR Grand National races, including the 1964 Capital City 300 at Nashville. In 1959 the South Carolina native finished runner-up for the national title. After Owens retired as a driver, he formed his own team and won 40 races, including the 1966 national championship with David Pearson driving. He also sponsored Buddy Baker's car between 1967 and 1970, winning the Southern 500 at Darlington in 1970. Owens retired as owner in 1973. Today the Hall of Famer owns and operates Cotton Owens Enterprises in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
